Children come to Newton Hall Infants’ School with a desire and enthusiasm to learn! As a staff and school community, it is our role to capture this and to develop their enquiring minds. We respond to our children’s needs by having a curriculum in place, which supports, encourages, excites and challenges them!
At Newton Hall Infants’ School, the intention of our curriculum is to develop the knowledge, skills and vocabulary that our children need to be successful learners, both now, and in the future. Our children will develop an awareness of how their learning in every subject builds on their prior learning as they apply what they have learned to a range of different contexts. Where possible, the national curriculum content will be taught within the context of our locality as we aim to develop our children’s sense of identity and place.
Our curriculum will provide the tools with which the children can develop lifelong learning characteristics. We aim to enable all children to:

- have a SENSE OF PRIDE
- be UNIQUE
At Newton Hall Infants’ School our ambitious curriculum is implemented through successful subject leadership, secure subject knowledge, detailed curriculum planning and is delivered via a progressive model. This enables children to remember the content they have been taught and to apply it in new and varied contexts. Children are able to build on previously taught skills to develop a cumulative knowledge base that can be developed for future learning.
The curriculum is delivered in discreet lessons, teaching our children what it means to be a ‘geographer’, ‘historian’, ‘scientist’, etc. This approach has been developed and refined through whole-school CPD (Continuous Professional Development) to ensure that all staff have contributed to the development of our approach to the implementation of the curriculum.
We take pride in providing a highly inclusive environment, where learners demonstrate high levels of enjoyment in their education and make very good progress in all subjects and areas of learning. Children at all levels are helped to achieve their potential, for example, those who are most able are challenged with tasks which provide opportunities for greater depth. Similarly, those who are less able are encouraged and given targeted support to embed skills, to develop at their own pace or simply to learn in a style that best suits their individual needs.
We review the impact of the implementation of our curriculum through ongoing formative and summative assessment. This enables teachers to check learners’ understanding systematically, identify misconceptions accurately and provide clear, direct feedback. This ensures that the curriculum meets the needs of all children, which is reflected in good or better progress.

You will see children who are adventurous, they are enthusiastic about their learning and have developed the skills to be resilient and problem-solve. To deepen their own understanding they are curious and inquisitive and will tackle a challenge head on.
You will see children who have a sense of pride in themselves, our school and our wider community. Children who can confidently express themselves and are tolerant and considerate individuals. They are proud to celebrate different cultures and beliefs and display high levels of respect.
You will see children who are unique. They are caring, confident and independent individuals. They have developed the personal and social skills they need; to believe they can achieve whatever they want.
You will see teachers and leaders who inspire, challenge and care for our children.
As a staff and school community, we never stop learning and growing. As such, our curriculum will continue to evolve and develop with the needs and interests of our children. We are confident that our curriculum allows our children to leave our school not only with a love of reading, writing and mathematics but also the ability to use number and language effectively. They will possess the skills and creative flair that they will need in real life and to equip them well on the next stage of their journey in education.
Curriculum Plans
Our curriculum is based on half-termly topics and we use the programmes of study which indicate the opportunities, experiences, skills and activities the children should experience in each subject as a starting point for our planning. During their three years at Newton Hall Infants’ School, each child will cover each part of the National Curriculum including six half termly topics for each year group. Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
At Newton Hall Infants’ School we believe that inclusive education means providing all pupils with appropriate education and support alongside their peers. The Curriculum is made up of all the planned activities that the school organises in order to promote learning, personal growth and development.
